“You sleep. I’ll stay awake and watch him for a while, and then we’ll switch”
This is the statement my husband made to me the night we brought our son Ben home from the hospital. We were both so exhausted. And so worried. How could a baby so small possibly breathe all night long on his own?? Without the watchful eyes of experienced nurses, we did what we thought we had to do to make it through the night.
This memory makes me laugh now, but we couldn’t have been any more serious at the time. New parenthood makes you a little crazy…
Really, the whole first year is full of ups and downs and uncertainty and so much sleep deprivation. But it is also full of amazing changes in your baby and all the exciting firsts that come along with this growth. Yep, it’s enough to make you crazy. But, crazy in a good way. And when your baby finally turns one, there is cause for celebration on so many levels!!
Back in May, I photographed this family for the first time when their daughter Carya was just 5 months old. Now approaching her first birthday she is full of personality, getting ready to walk, and has a head full of hair!! Elvis the dog came along again, too, because it wouldn’t be a family portrait without him!
For fear of ruining the surprise & excitement of their holiday card, I will just share this one special image for now. This session was so bright and colorful and full of smiles, but when I look at this quiet moment, I feel just how truly bittersweet it is to be celebrating your baby’s first birthday….
The essence of my work is to capture the beautiful & fleeting moments of life. I strive to create emotional images that will conjure happy memories for years to come.
Each week I will bring you one of my favorite session moments to enjoy! See all of the ‘Monday Moments’ here.
