Welcome Baby Luca! | Boston Newborn Photography

Introducing Baby Luca! I got to go out to Luca’s family’s home in the greater Boston area just 14 days after Luca was born.

I was particularly excited about this session, because this was my fourth time photographing this family. I was there when Luca’s big brother, James, was born and even got to do his one-year pictures! I love being around them, and I love that they value family photography, too. Because we have worked together several times, we’ve been able to recreate one special images of Mom and James together in his room from a teeny tiny baby until now.  I love to see his progression over the years!

Normally, families try to do newborn photography within the first week after a baby is born. After all, that’s when the baby is so little and so sleepy that it’s easy to get those adorable cuddling, sleepy photos. But in this case, life got in the way! Poor Mom came down with a high fever at the last minute during that first week, so we had to reschedule.

And what a difference a week makes. Luca was more alert at 2 weeks old, but that just meant we were able to capture more shots with Luca’s eyes wide open. I don’t think there is a “wrong” time for a newborn session, and I actually love these pictures of older babies because you can see more of their personalities and determine who they look like. Besides, if I’m being honest, I didn’t feel thrilled to be photographed just a couple days after I came home from the hospital with any of my babies!

This was my third time photographing this family in their home, and I have loved it every time. My style of indoor photography is moody, emotive, and dramatic—and this home is perfect for that! I love the light and shadows, especially the dramatic lighting that draws the viewer’s eye down to Mom and Dad and their new baby.

It’s always hard to pick a favorite moment for newborn sessions because there are so many wonderful pictures and memories being made in those first days and weeks! But if I had to pick one, I would say I absolutely loved when James was looking into the crib at his new baby brother and reached out to hold his hand. Nobody told him to do that; he was just curious and did it on his own. It was an organic moment between brothers—such a small thing, but a sweet moment. I also loved the comparison of dad’s hands on baby’s hands—again, such a small detail . . . but a powerful one.

Thank you, Mom & Dad, for inviting me into your home again and for letting me document this amazing time for your family! I love when I get to see you all and can’t wait to come back!
