Sweet Saachi & Family, Needham Family Photo Session

Larz Anderson Park Fall Family Session Cara Soulia Photography

There’s something so beautiful about fall in New England, even when it’s rainy and dreary. It was such a delight to meet up with sweet little Saachi and her family at Larz Anderson Park in Brookline, Massachusetts for a family photo session filled with fall foliage, despite a rainy start.

It was drizzly the morning of our session, and I wasn’t sure if the family would want to go ahead with the photos. But, I knew there was some beautiful foliage at the location we chose. It was not your typical beautiful fall day in Brookline. I talked to mom on the phone and we decided to go for it! This family had just moved to Needham, MA from San Francisco so they were used to this kind of weather. They wanted to capture the magnificent New England foliage after moving here from the West Coast. I’m so happy they decided to brave the weather.

When we met up, the rain was definitely on and off. Thankfully, it wasn’t anything too crazy, so we were able to have a successful session. Mom’s father came along and he was so sweet with baby Saachi. You can tell she has really stolen his heart.

And who can blame him? Look at those eyes! Her beautiful, unique eyes were piercing. A sharp contrast to her darker hair. Mom and Dad also had darker hair and eyes, so I had to ask about them. Mom said that her sister has stunning, light eyes just like Saachi’s. They are just so mesmerizing and I loved how the bright colors of the leaves and the bright colors of her eyes came together.

Back Bay Newborn Session Cara Soulia Photography

Welcome to the world, Baby Vivian! I was thrilled to photograph this little girl in Back Bay, Boston, just 7 days after she was born.

I already knew this family after having done a newborn session and then one-year session for big brother Miles, so when I heard that they were expecting again, I couldn’t have been more thrilled! I love when families get to experience a boy and a girl (I have two boys and a girl myself) because it’s so interesting seeing the difference between raising boys and girls.

It was so much fun to see how much Miles has grown. This is one of the reasons I love having return clients: I get to see so much more than just those baby milestones. I get to see these kids turning into their own little people! And watching Miles taking on the role of big brother was too fun. One of my favorite images of the whole day was when he read his “big brother” book while Mom was looking on and smiling.

But my favorite moment was probably when I got the most unconventional family portrait that really captured their daily lives. Miles was jumping on the bed, Mom was feeding the baby—this is life for this family, and I wanted to do it justice! After all, this will all be a blur someday, and I want to capture those moments while I can!

This family lives in one of those quaint old brownstones in the heart of Back Bay. It was a beautiful day in Boston, with light streaming in through the windows. We even got to go outside for some family photos on the front steps at the end of the session!

Thank you, Mom and Dad, for allowing me to photograph your beautiful family. It was such a treat to see how much you’ve all grown!

8 myths about hiring a photographer to take your family photos | Boston Family Photographer

8 myths about hiring a photographer to take your family photos | Boston Family Photographer

Boston Family Photographer

I’ve been a Boston family photographer for almost eight years and have worked with so many children and families of all types, shapes, sizes, colors and personalities.  Although my clients vary widely, I would say there are definitely a few questions that are commonly asked and I find there are some misconceptions out there about hiring a photographer to take your family photos.  I wrote this blog post to bust those myths!!

Myth #1:  It’s going to take forever

Not true! Kids’ attention spans are really only about 45 minutes long. I work very fast and can usually get everything I need in this amount of time. Occasionally we are having so much fun we decide to keep going, but you do not need to block off your whole morning or your whole afternoon for me!

Myth #2: It’s going to be boring

Wrong again! We’ll chat before your session to figure out the location that makes the most sense for your family. Sometimes a session at home is best if your children feel most comfortable there. I can suggest lots of beautiful places in the area as well. But either way, the session will be more like hanging out with a friend who happens to have her really nice camera with her than a stuffy uptight posed photo shoot.

Myth #3: It’s going to involve a lot of awkward posing and saying cheese

Nope nope nope! In fact, the opposite is true. We will walk, hang out, play, run around and basically do everything except pose and say cheese. I will guide you and help you look your best and maybe take ONE or TWO photos of the whole family smiling at the camera but other than that, you can relax and be yourself. I’ll take care of the rest!

Arnold Arboretum Family Portraits Cara Soulia Photography

This family session last October was perfectly timed at the height of the fall foliage here in Boston, and we took full advantage of that at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.

Scheduling a Session at the Peak of Boston Fall Foliage

A lot of clients will ask me when the best time is to schedule their fall session if they want gorgeous fall foliage. The problem is that it’s always hard to predict, because the weather can turn on us on a whim. Sometimes, the leaves turn early; sometimes, they turn late. For this family session in particular, we just happened to meet up at the absolute peak of the foliage—and I do mean the peak. Right after we met, it rained, and the leaves fell! Talk about lucky.

Mom had actually gotten in touch with me last year to ask about a family session after following me on Facebook for a while. She loved the personal photos I posted of my own children and wanted something similar. I love it when people find me on Facebook or Instagram because I post a lot of personal stories there. I think that helps people (more…)

Fun with friends at the Arboretum

Fun with friends at the Arboretum

Last summer, I met up with this awesome crew at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts for a family photo session in one of my favorite local spots.

This photo session was particularly special to me because these beautiful people are good friends of our family! Mom has always said she’s a fan of my work, so her husband surprised her with a gift certificate on her birthday for a photo session. What a great birthday present!  Good job Dad!  Although, it’s not really surprising he would give such a thoughtful gift.  Mom & Dad are both sweet, caring and considerate — they’re the kind of people you are always so happy to see.
