Back Bay Newborn love| Boston Baby Photographer

Before I became a photographer, I had this notion that I wanted to be a nurse.  I have an old drawing I did when I was a little girl that says, “I want to be a nurse when I grew up so I can help people.”  And after I became a mom, I thought quite seriously about pursuing a career as a labor & delivery or a postpartum nurse.  Like many others, my experiences with the nurses before, during, and after the delivery of my three children were, quite simply, amazing. These women play such an important role at a most vulnerable time in our lives.  It feels like our birth stories aren’t complete without the mention of the wonderful nurses at our side throughout.  For as long as I can remember, I have longed to have a career that was as fulfilling as being a nurse.

But I had to be honest with myself — I’m pretty squeamish.   I may have even fainted at a blood drive once in front of my entire 10th grade class.  It definitely makes the list of my top 10 most embarrassing moments ever.

Then life has a funny way of giving you what you’re looking for when you least expect it.

As I am approaching my six year anniversary of professionally photographing babies and families, I realize that my work actually allows me to do so many of the things that I admired and respected about nursing.  I get to talk to and support moms during the most emotional days of their lives.  I get to hold and snuggle brand new babies on a regular basis. Sometimes, I meet a first time mom and I get to teach her my favorite way to shush or swaddle.  And sometimes it’s a seasoned mom and we can trade stories about our pregnancies and births.  Every day I’m breathtakingly grateful that I get to do something for work that I love so much (without any blood or fainting!).

Life’s unexpected twists led me to the work I love, and it brought me into the home of this wonderful family.

I loved everything about this newborn session in this gorgeous old Boston apartment building, with its huge windows letting in so much beautiful light, and the simple, adorable decor and, of course the stunning couple, who just welcomed their first baby girl into the world.   These images make my heart spill over…
