I know it’s hard to believe, but not everyone is thrilled to get in front of a camera. This can be especially true for active young boys who have about a million things they’d rather do than sit for a photo session. I recently photographed a friend and her family, and as we prepped for the shoot, she worried out loud that her sons might not be the most cooperative subjects.
One of the challenges–and joys!–of being a family photographer is easing reluctant kids (and sometimes parents!) into the session, making them feel comfortable, helping them open up, and then capturing the unique traits that shine through. Like my friend’s older son’s sweet sensitivity, and her younger son’s precocious, silly side.
Oh, and I just have to point out that gorgeous red hair!
I try to photograph families in natural settings where they feel free to enjoy their time together and just have fun. It never takes long for even the most skeptical among them to relax a bit and just be themselves.
A family photo session might not be at the top of any young boy’s to-do list, but with a little bit of sunshine, big, beautiful trees to climb, and your favorite people by your side, it can be a walk in the park…
