As a Boston Family Photographer, I meet a lot of new people throughout the year. We email, chat by phone, and then meet in person for our photo sessions. Because I’m photographing their joyful moments, I hear a lot of personal stories. This year, thanks to hundreds of maternity, newborn, family, and school clients, I heard stories of love, pride, excitement, and joy. There were stories of loss, grief, new beginnings and triumph. Today I realized that I do not have any recent, amazing images of my own mother. The mother who has always been there for me, during every stage of my life. The person who supports me and every single one of my crazy ideas and big life dreams. The “Gigi” who always makes time to read a book or play games with her grandchildren. (or, in the last year, who made time to play babysitter over zoom when I needed it most!)
Maybe it’s the new year or maybe it’s the realities facing us in 2021, but I see – and feel – a lot more than usual when I reflect on the moment I captured this image in this Dad’s home office. I see Presence.
