If I had to guess one of the top reasons why people don’t have professional photos taken of their family, I would say that they think it’s too much effort — it requires too much mental space to organize, plan and prepare. Who has time to be picking out coordinating outfits and worrying about timing and location and posing and bribing your kids to smile and all the other details when they are busy running around from work to daycare to soccer practice to the grocery store, etc!! Who needs that kind of stress in their life?
Nobody. And I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that hard.
Here is a perfect example: I met this awesome family through my school portrait program. ( Ironically, their daughter was sick the day of school photos so I never actually got to photographer her, but her mom saw some of her classmates’ images and decided to get in touch! ) Rather than make things too complicated, we decided that I would just come over one weekday evening after work/school for some photos in their backyard. I will admit we were quite lucky with the weather that evening and their hydrangeas were in full bloom, which contributed to the beauty of their images. But in my opinion, the real reason the session was so successful was because nobody was trying too hard.
Essentially, we just hung out together and played in the back yard for about a half hour. Then we decided to take some more formal everyone-look-at-the-camera photos on the front steps. All in all the session lasted about 45 minutes and this family now has a whole slew of beautiful images to cherish for a lifetime. They will look at these photos and remember when their son was sitting up unassisted, barely had any hair on his head, and had the biggest, most captivating blue eyes on the planet. And when their daughter was so full of personality and giggles and loved her baby brother, her stuffed bunny, and her hula hoop, in that order.
These are the best most fleeting days of your life as parents of young children. Capturing this time is so wonderful and beautiful and important. And it doesn’t have to be complicated.
