I always encourage my clients not to overthink their family photo sessions. While we may take a few typical shots, the rest are intentionally casual, sweet, and fun. So don’t worry about looking too fancy or standing too perfectly. Just be you.
Arnold Arboretum Family Photographer
This family took my advice and our photo session last Fall was simply amazing. We met at one of my favorite spots, the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, for a walk in the park. Just that. A walk in the park.
(In one of the most gorgeous parks in the area, of course).
I strive so hard – in every single session – to capture much more than a just pretty photo. My goal is to put the emotions and bonds between a loving family into a striking image that tells a story of their lives at that moment in time.
This family of four, including Coraline (3.5) and Elias (9 mos.), was thrilled for a late September session. The leaves hadn’t turned yet, so when the kids were ready to sit and rest, we chose one of the prettiest evergreen areas of the park.
I’m meeting with this family for their annual session again soon. I can’t wait to see how much the kids have grown. And, their grandparents will be joining us as well. Watch my Instagram for a sneak peek!
Isn’t Elias adorable, sitting so patiently on his blanket? Nine months is a fantastic age to photograph a child. Their personalities have emerged. They’re able to sit up and participate in a family experience. But, they can’t toddle away!
I love this image of Coraline. From the low angle she looks older than her actual age, like a glimpse into the future. Maybe I’ll be able to catch this angle again this week, giving Mom and Dad a true insight into how quickly they grow.

Meet baby Lily! Just a few short weeks ago, I met up with this lovely family at their home in Wayland, Massachusetts to welcome their newest edition. Lily was just 13 days old at the time of her newborn session, and what a beautiful little baby she is!
A Sweet Wayland Newborn Session
This was my second photography session with this family. I first met them last fall for a family session when big brother Graham was just two years old. It was an outdoor family portrait session in the beautiful Massachusetts foliage, so this newborn session in their home was a totally different vibe. It was raining on the day of their session, which I actually love because window light is always so beautiful on an overcast day. And really, the light in New England in the fall is so magical that even on a dreary, rainy day, it’s still perfect for photography.
Having a newborn session in a family’s home is so wonderful for capturing precious moments. It’s all about seeing how a family adjusts to having a new little person added to their life! Mom and Dad were so calm and relaxed during this session — they made having two babies and multitasking look easy!
I started off the session taking some time to capture Graham. When there’s a new baby in the house, I like spending time with the older sibling. Sometimes it’s a hard adjustment, having a new baby in the house, but big brother Graham seemed to be adjusting smoothly to life with a sibling. He was curious and so sweet and gentle. I think he will be a great big brother and will do a great job taking care of his little sister.
My favorite moment was when Graham held Lily in the rocking chair. The light was beautiful. He was so careful with his baby sister. He had a look of curiosity on his face as he smiled at her and touched her hands. One of my favorite images is the detail shot of Graham gently holding Lily’s tiny foot. It was just a precious moment and that level of tenderness from an almost three year old was amazing. I felt lucky to be there to capture it.
It was such a pleasure to photograph this family of four. Mom and Dad, thank you for inviting me into your home to document your beautiful family. I look forward to seeing you all again in the future!
Welcome to the world, Baby Vivian! I was thrilled to photograph this little girl in Back Bay, Boston, just 7 days after she was born.

I already knew this family after having done a newborn session and then one-year session for big brother Miles, so when I heard that they were expecting again, I couldn’t have been more thrilled! I love when families get to experience a boy and a girl (I have two boys and a girl myself) because it’s so interesting seeing the difference between raising boys and girls.
It was so much fun to see how much Miles has grown. This is one of the reasons I love having return clients: I get to see so much more than just those baby milestones. I get to see these kids turning into their own little people! And watching Miles taking on the role of big brother was too fun. One of my favorite images of the whole day was when he read his “big brother” book while Mom was looking on and smiling.

But my favorite moment was probably when I got the most unconventional family portrait that really captured their daily lives. Miles was jumping on the bed, Mom was feeding the baby—this is life for this family, and I wanted to do it justice! After all, this will all be a blur someday, and I want to capture those moments while I can!
This family lives in one of those quaint old brownstones in the heart of Back Bay. It was a beautiful day in Boston, with light streaming in through the windows. We even got to go outside for some family photos on the front steps at the end of the session!
Thank you, Mom and Dad, for allowing me to photograph your beautiful family. It was such a treat to see how much you’ve all grown!

I met up with this amazing family of four in August for a portrait session at Waters Farm in Sutton, Massachusetts.
Family Portraits through the Years | Sutton Family Photography
I have been working with this family for the last 3 years, ever since their second daughter, Isabelle, was born! Since that time, I’ve been thrilled to watch this family grow as both of their little girls develop their own personalities and have adventures together. I look forward to their family session every year because I know it’s always going to be a treat! Mom and Dad are both professors and such interesting people, so I always enjoy talking with them—and all four of them are some of the sweetest, most laid-back people to work with, too! I always design a coffee table album for Mom every year, and I know she has a growing collection on her shelf from our sessions together.
Last year, we did a session at their home, so this year, we wanted to do something different. We decided on Waters Farm not only for its beauty but because of its significance to their family, since they love to go see the gorgeous farm together.
A Fun Family Session at Waters Farm
We had hoped to get some amazing sunset pictures, but unfortunately, it was overcast on the day of the session. In the end, it all worked out; we were lucky to get some dramatic clouds instead, which were stunning as a backdrop, too. This is such a gorgeous location that it was easy to fall in love with the venue and light!
Mom also brought some wildflowers from her garden, which looked gorgeous in her little girls’ hands. Lila and Isabelle loved running around the open field and twirling in their dresses, so of course, some of my favorite pictures from the whole session showcased those precocious girls and their personalities!
I barely have to direct this family at all, which is part of why I love working with them! They all just fall naturally together. I can tell their connection is strong, which makes photographing them not only easy but fun as well.
Thank you to this amazing family for yet another stellar session! I always love putting together your albums, and I already can’t wait for next time!

If I had to guess one of the top reasons why people don’t have professional photos taken of their family, I would say that they think it’s too much effort — it requires too much mental space to organize, plan and prepare. Who has time to be picking out coordinating outfits and worrying about timing and location and posing and bribing your kids to smile and all the other details when they are busy running around from work to daycare to soccer practice to the grocery store, etc!! Who needs that kind of stress in their life?
Nobody. And I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that hard.
