I host hundreds of family photography sessions in the Boston area every year.
To prepare, many clients ask me for advice on location, clothing, and what to do if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Many questions, lots of answers.
Want to know the one piece of advice that I need to give more?
Bring the grandparents.
Boston Extended Family Session
I received an urgent email in early September asking if I had any immediate availability for a Boston extended family session. The patriarch of the family had just been diagnosed with advanced cancer and they wanted to take photos as soon as possible.
This isn’t the first time I’ve received a session inquiry for this reason. And, it’s a request that I will always try to accommodate and never regret.
Within days I had the pleasure of meeting the entire crew: 3 sisters, their husbands, children and, of course, the grandparents. We met at one of my very favorite spots in the Arnold Arboretum and enjoyed a picture perfect morning of laughs, which I know every single person needed and appreciated.
This grandfather is adored by his three daughters, their husbands and his six grandchildren.
Hanging with this family for just over an hour I witnessed their vibe; Silly at times, in sync and committed to each other in other moments. Their connection was visibly strong. With each image, I whispered to myself:
Show their connections.
I knew this session needed to create images that will support a family through grief and ultimately become keepsakes for years to come.
Investing in an extended family photo session is worth the time and money. I promise.
Many families make the effort to all get together for holidays, weddings and baby showers, but they’re busy events and someone is always distracted. Never is the focus on simple fun and the joy of capturing a moment.
That’s truly the goal of a family photo session. Capturing this one special moment.
And that’s what we did. On a beautiful September day, I witnessed love, laughs and true connection within a family that adores its amazing patriarch.
What else could you ask for?
