In a Blink of an Eye, They’ll Be Grown

Boston-Family-Photography-Cara-Soulia

Don’t worry, this post isn’t filled with the standard cliches about “the days being long but the years are short.” I know it and you know it: sometimes raising a family can be tiring. Sometimes there are days, weeks, even months that feel like they drag on forever. The combination of work demands, family schedules, growing pains and unexpected life hurdles happens to everyone, and sometimes all you can do is simply hold on.

However, when my oldest turned 13 and my youngest hit preschool the metal pan hit me *smack* on the head. Hard. The cliches – no matter how boring – are correct. Time is flying, and my kids are changing nonstop.

So are yours.

I’ve been photographing these sisters Isabelle (left) and Lila (right) every year for five years. The top image, from 2018 at Waters Farm, showcases their stunning beauty and youthful energy. When compared to the second image in the wooden playhouse window, taken just a year earlier, they haven’t changed too much. But keep scrolling and you’ll see how fast five years flew by.

I’m fortunate to have many clients who invest in an annual Boston family photography session. They’re gleeful when the images come back after a session: the perfect light, location and innocence on their family’s faces is so bittersweet. It’s happening! They’re creating a beautiful family, and life feels like it will stay so perfect forever.

The beautiful family does remain, but the days go faster, and those little toes get bigger. And before you know it, your toddlers become preschoolers, and then third graders, and – yowza – somehow they’re in middle school. Did I mention that I’ve been told high school goes by the fastest?

Life is fast. I am so thrilled when clients know that investing in an annual session and taking two hours to freeze time will elicit visual treasures that will last a lifetime.

Capture the moments in between the busy days. In the months ahead, you’ll chuckle over the energy of that day. You’ll soak up the laughs caught on camera. You’ll share the images with family and friends. Maybe you’ll display some in your home. You’ll cherish the chance to sit with the images when your children are older, even grown. They’ll giggle when looking back on themselves as babies and toddlers.

And wait five years, or ten, or more. The value of those sentimental moments will double and triple annually, I promise.

Because you can’t get the time back. But you can freeze it.

It seems like just yesterday I was taking this image of Isabelle and Lila just after Isabelle was born. But it wasn’t just yesterday.

And the time has flown by.

You’d never know it by the weather, but October is here — which means November (and December!) are right around the corner. I’m just going to say it: It’s time to think about your Boston Holiday Card Photos.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I always have my camera in my hand. I’m always aiming to freeze time. I desperately want to snag the images that capture a family (including mine!) in their essence: the personal moments of joy, silliness, rest, love or comfort.

I take my ambition to capture those soulful moments with me to every single family photo session. Can I capture the moment that will freeze time for you, just that one day, one glance, one laugh?

My clients use their images in many ways. I’ve helped create stunning albums, gallery walls, framed images for desks, and perhaps the most popular: The Annual Holiday Card.

Read on to see some of my favorite images that adorned my clients’ holiday cards over the years.

Sibling Sister Love. Such a gorgeous family and great day for a session at Lars Anderson Park in Brookline. I love the age range of these girls. A year later, they’ll look so different. So grateful we stopped time just for this moment.

Sweet Goodbye. I love and miss this once-from-Needham family so much. With an impending move to Washington, D.C., they sought a series of keepsakes that would allow them to remember their Needham home. Nothing fancy. Barefoot. Casual. I wrote all about their story on the blog.

That giggle, right? I remember when this family showed me their holiday card. The theme was Joy. While the boys certainly look happy, I think the real joy was felt by their parents. They received so many compliments!

Boston-Holiday-Card-Photos-Cara Soulia-Photography-0014

Classic, right? Nothing makes opening up the nightly pile of cards more fun than the one that offers humor and the honesty of #reallife. Sandwiched between his bawling sisters, this sweet boy was doing all he could to smile for the friendly photographer (I was laughing, of course!).

No words for these gorgeous girls running through the wildflowers as their parents chill in the background. Perfect.

I always chuckle when I see this fun family from Newton. I’ve had the pleasure of photographing them for close to ten years! Every time the boys are getting bigger and bigger. I find myself cheering on their mom, the lone female in the home!  Of course, she is fantastic.

And, lastly, my holiday card: The Soulia Family 2018. Like you, I haven’t chosen our image for 2019 yet, but my camera is ready for my family and yours.

Get in touch to schedule a session before the holidays arrive.

Pure Perfection.

That’s how I felt when I left this Roslindale newborn session, my third time connecting with this fantastic family who just welcomed their second child, Eloise.

It seems like just yesterday I was invited to photograph Eloise’s big brother, Gil, when he was just six weeks old. The new parents were living at MassArt at the time. Ten months later, Gil was growing fast (10 months old!) when we captured these amazing images during a Spring Photo Session at the Arboretum.

Three years since we first met, this lovely family now lives in a beautiful home in Roslindale. Eloise was just 12 days old when I had the pleasure of joining them for a photo session last week. Welcome, Eloise.

Not one moment of this session was rushed, hustled or staged. Eloise’s family is the epitome of relaxation. I love being part of their lives, even for just 90 minutes a year, because I love feeling so immersed in their low-key energy. I’m confident Eloise feels the pure sense of peace surrounding her.

I also love the colors in this home. Dad’s art is displayed everywhere, making the atmosphere vibrant and creative at once.

Like I said, Pure Perfection.

And then there’s Gil. He’s such a love. And growing up so quickly. Three years old! He’s bouncing all around, simply thrilled to show off his new sister to the friendly lady with a camera.

All of my newborn session’s are done in the comfort and convenience of a family’s home. I really feel that a session isn’t just about the new baby. It’s about the evolution of a family and their space to a new wonderful phase of living.

On this day, it was really warm, so we took advantage of the weather and went out into the backyard as well. Everyone was thrilled, especially Gil!

Back Bay Newborn Session Cara Soulia Photography

Welcome to the world, Baby Vivian! I was thrilled to photograph this little girl in Back Bay, Boston, just 7 days after she was born.

Back Bay Newborn Photography

I already knew this family after having done a newborn session and then one-year session for big brother Miles, so when I heard that they were expecting again, I couldn’t have been more thrilled! I love when families get to experience a boy and a girl (I have two boys and a girl myself) because it’s so interesting seeing the difference between raising boys and girls.

It was so much fun to see how much Miles has grown. This is one of the reasons I love having return clients: I get to see so much more than just those baby milestones. I get to see these kids turning into their own little people! And watching Miles taking on the role of big brother was too fun. One of my favorite images of the whole day was when he read his “big brother” book while Mom was looking on and smiling.

Candid Family Photography

But my favorite moment was probably when I got the most unconventional family portrait that really captured their daily lives. Miles was jumping on the bed, Mom was feeding the baby—this is life for this family, and I wanted to do it justice! After all, this will all be a blur someday, and I want to capture those moments while I can!

This family lives in one of those quaint old brownstones in the heart of Back Bay. It was a beautiful day in Boston, with light streaming in through the windows. We even got to go outside for some family photos on the front steps at the end of the session!

Thank you, Mom and Dad, for allowing me to photograph your beautiful family. It was such a treat to see how much you’ve all grown!

Needham Family Session Cara Soulia Photography

This summer,  I met up with a Needham family for a session that was especially near and dear to my heart.

I have known this family of five for a long time now. Their older daughter has been good friends with my own daughter since they were in Kindergarten! When I heard the news that they would be relocating to the Washington, D.C. area, I knew it would be hard to say goodbye. It’s so hard to see friends leave, especially since they’ve built up such an amazing network here in our town.

Farewell Family Photography Session

The mom in this family thought it was important to get some photos taken before they moved, and I have to say: I agree wholeheartedly. I always tell people to take photos when they move into or out of a home.  Even if it’s just a simple snapshot on the front steps — it’s one of those important moments you will want to remember.  For this family in particular, their home is full of memories and holds great sentimental value. It’s the place where they brought all of their babies home from the hospital, where they took their first steps, and had so many other important firsts.

One of my favorite images from this session was when the whole family just snuggled together on the front steps with their new puppy Peanut!  Of course Peanut couldn’t sit still…he was just a few weeks old.  I love how he just jumped up on his big sister to kiss her cheek.   Needham Family Session Cara Soulia Photography Needham Family Session Cara Soulia Photography
