A Mother’s Work: Antoinette Hemphill, Mamabeasts

“A Mother’s Work” is a blog series challenging the traditional concept that women can’t prioritize both their careers and their children. Featuring female entrepreneurs who are also mothers, “A Mother’s Work” showcases women who are passionate about running their business while also raising a family, each with interesting and inspirational stories to tell about their continuing journeys through career and motherhood, and their own challenges and victories in the age-old quest to balance work and family.

It was an unseasonably warm afternoon in October when I met up with this family in Hull, MA for their family portrait session. Mom and I were both worried it would be too cold for a beach session, but the weather turned out to be amazing. The sky and sunset were exquisite. We all felt so lucky to have such perfect weather for their beach session in Boston.

This summer,  I met up with a Needham family for a session that was especially near and dear to my heart.

I have known this family of five for a long time now. Their oldest daughter has been good friends with my own daughter since they were in Kindergarten! When I heard the news that they would be relocating to the Washington, D.C. area, I knew it would be hard to say goodbye. It’s so hard to see friends leave, especially since they’ve built up such an amazing network of friends here in town.

I first met this family back in 2012 — I was photographing an event at Solutions at Work in Cambridge (a nonprofit that offers homeless and low-income families children’s items and professional clothing for new jobs to meet their needs as they achieve self-sufficiency), and this family was there participating at the event. I noticed Lani, the older girl, right away because she was so stunning—I simply had to ask her parents if I could take pictures of this beautiful girl! Six years later, Lani has turned into a gorgeous young lady, and I had the pleasure of meeting her little sister, Lorelai, who wasn’t born yet when I first met her family.

I have been working with this family for the last 3 years, ever since their second daughter, Isabelle, was born! Since that time, I’ve been thrilled to watch this family grow as both of their little girls develop their own personalities and have adventures together. I look forward to their family session every year because I know it’s always going to be a treat! Mom and Dad are both professors and such interesting people, so I always enjoy talking with them—and all four of them are some of the sweetest, most laid-back people to work with, too! I always design a coffee table album for Mom every year, and I know she has a growing collection on her shelf from our sessions together.

This wonderful family of six lives in my town, and although I had never met them in person before our session, we have a number of mutual friends. After spending time with this family, it struck me how comfortable I felt with them, and how down to earth they are — I can see why we have friends in common!  Their oldest daughter, Claire, was about to get braces, so Mom wanted to have some photos taken before that big event!  And, of course, she wanted to capture the rest of the family, too, at this time in their lives!

A couple of years ago, I photographed Michelle Wu and her family at the Arnold Arboretum in Roslindale, Massachusetts. Since then, I have continued to meet up with her family as they’ve grown, adding a second little boy, and I most recently saw them this past weekend!

8 myths about hiring a photographer to take your family photos | Boston Family Photographer

I’ve been a Boston family photographer for almost eight years and have worked with so many children and families of all types, shapes, sizes, colors and personalities.  Although my clients vary widely, I would say there are definitely a few questions that are commonly asked and I find there are some misconceptions out there about hiring a photographer to take your family photos.  I wrote this blog post to bust those myths!!

This family session last October was perfectly timed at the height of the fall foliage here in Boston, and we took full advantage of that at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.

Scheduling a Session at the Peak of Boston Fall Foliage

A lot of clients will ask me when the best time is to schedule their fall session if they want gorgeous fall foliage. The problem is that it’s always hard to predict, because the weather can turn on us on a whim. Sometimes, the leaves turn early; sometimes, they turn late. For this family session in particular, we just happened to meet up at the absolute peak of the foliage—and I do mean the peak. Right after we met, it rained, and the leaves fell! Talk about lucky.

Mom had actually gotten in touch with me last year to ask about a family session after following me on Facebook for a while. She loved the personal photos I posted of my own children and wanted something similar. I love it when people find me on Facebook or Instagram because I post a lot of personal stories there. I think that helps people
